About the job

Position: Fintech Regulatory & Contracts Attorney – Remote, Flexible

Work from anywhere. Set your own hours. Do sharp legal work for fintech founders.

About Advoco

Advoco is a fractional General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer firm for early-stage fintech companies. We help founders launch products, secure bank partnerships, and build compliance programs that hold up to sponsor bank and regulator scrutiny. We're fully remote, built on flexible work, and growing faster than our capacity. This is our first attorney hire.

The role
  • This role is for a lawyer who loves the work itself: digging into a hard question, getting the answer right, and writing it up clearly.
  • Here's how it works.

I'll hand you a client question with my initial read. You research it, verify or challenge my assessment, and turn it into finished work product: a memo, client-ready advice, or a recommended path. You'll also own contract negotiations and redlines from first draft to signature.

Responsibilities
  • Research regulatory and legal questions across federal and state fintech law
  • Verify, pressure-test, and refine initial assessments, and tell me when I'm wrong
  • Prepare memos, client advice, and analyses that are ready to send
  • Draft, redline, and negotiate fintech agreements:

BaaS and program agreements, vendor and processor contracts, MSAs, customer terms

  • Lead negotiation calls with counter parties when needed
  • Help build our research library, templates, and contract playbooks
Qualifications
  • JD and active bar admission in any US state, in good standing
  • 4-7 years of practice, with fintech, banking, or payments experience
  • Genuine enjoyment of research and analysis, with the rigor to verify every conclusion
  • Strong writing that is clear, concise, and readable by founders
  • Real contract negotiation experience, not just review
  • Working knowledge of at least one of: EFTA/Reg E, UDAAP, BSA/AML, money transmission or lending licensing, card network rules
Nice to have
  • In-house experience at a fintech, sponsor bank, or payments company
  • Bank partnership or sponsor bank diligence experience
  • Comfort with AI research and drafting tools, plus the judgment to verify their output

How we work

  • 100% remote, with no office and no commute
  • Set your own hours, with a minimum of about 15 hrs/week
  • Respond to messages within one business day
  • Available for scheduled client calls during US business hours
  • Workload grows as you want, with a path to full-time
Compensation

$140-$175/hour; salaried option at full-time
