Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function and serve as a strategic partner to senior finance leadership. This individual will own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close while overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury, payroll accounting, taxes, travel and expense, and indirect procurement. The Controller will play a critical role in building the processes, controls, systems, and team capabilities required to support a rapidly growing organization. This position will partner closely with FP&A and business leaders to maintain the integrity of financial information, strengthen reporting, improve forecasting, and turn financial data into actionable business insights. Key Responsibilities Own accounting operations across the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, accruals, and related functions. Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process while continuously improving its speed, accuracy, controls, and repeatability. Review and approve balance sheet and general ledger reconciliations and oversee payroll review prior to processing. Manage accounting for seasonal business activity, including revenue recognition, deferred revenue, and partner commission arrangements. Oversee treasury operations, daily cash management, cash forecasting, banking relationships, liquidity planning, and covenant compliance. Serve as the organization's technical accounting expert, including U.S. GAAP matters involving ASC 606 revenue recognition, ASC 842 lease accounting, deferred revenue, and equity transactions. Research complex accounting matters and prepare clear, well-supported technical accounting memoranda. Evaluate the accounting implications of new contracts, transactions, and business initiatives. Independently prepare complete GAAP-compliant financial statements, including the P&L, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows. Perform variance, trend, and KPI analysis and communicate the story behind financial results to senior leadership. Partner with FP&A on budgeting, forecasting, executive reporting, and long-range planning. Design, document, and maintain scalable accounting policies and a strong internal control framework. Independently lead the annual financial statement audit and serve as the primary contact for external auditors. Oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance in partnership with outside advisors, including multi-state sales and use tax. Lead other applicable audits, including sales tax, retirement plan, and bank-related audits. Build scalable indirect procurement and contract-management processes with appropriate approval and documentation controls. Own and continuously improve accounts payable, travel and expense, ERP, and related accounting systems. Drive automation and process improvement throughout accounting to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Identify and implement system improvements and integrations across accounting and financial reporting. Explore practical applications of emerging technologies, including AI, that can improve finance and accounting workflows. Build accounting infrastructure capable of supporting continued growth, new business lines, and potential acquisitions. Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and accounts payable professionals while fostering accountability, ownership, continuous improvement, and strong business partnership. Plan team structure and capacity, and oversee hiring, training, development, delegation, and performance management. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Active CPA license in good standing required. 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful team leadership responsibility. Combination of public accounting/audit and corporate accounting experience highly preferred. Experience working within a high-growth, multi-location organization; private-equity-backed or founder-led company experience is a plus. Deep, hands-on knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606, ASC 842, deferred revenue, and equity accounting. Demonstrated ability to research complex accounting issues and prepare well-supported technical accounting memoranda. Proven experience independently leading annual financial statement audits from planning and PBC requests through final issuance. Ability to independently prepare complete GAAP-compliant financial statements. Demonstrated ownership of monthly close processes with a history of improving speed, accuracy, controls, and repeatability. Strong accounting systems expertise; Large ERP experience is a plus. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and a strong aptitude for implementing and improving financial technology. Interest in applying automation, AI, and emerging technologies to practical accounting and reporting challenges. Proven ability to build, lead, develop, and retain high-performing accounting teams. Strong ownership mentality with the willingness to roll up your sleeves during demanding periods. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial matters to non-finance stakeholders.
